Solid Waste

Solid Waste is a division of the Public Works Department.  The Solid Waste Division is responsible for managing the City of Kerrville’s residential solid waste collections and disposal operations. The City of Kerrville owns a municipal landfill, transfer station, and composting facility.  Republic Services is contracted to provide all collection services for residential customers. To protect public health and safety, the Solid Waste Division provides a variety of municipal solid waste services to residents that are safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible. The list of services include:
  • Collection of regular garbage
  • Collection of single-stream recycling
  • Monthly collection for yard waste
  • Collections and drop off opportunities for bulky waste items
  • Household Hazardous Waste drop off event - typically held in October/November
  • Collection of dead animals

Department Responsibilities

  • Customer Service: responsible for providing customer service to City residents by acting as a liaison between the City and the collection contractor, Republic Services
  • City Contracts: responsible for overseeing both contracts with Republic Services; which include the Landfill Operations and Disposal Agreement, and the Collection Agreement for Residential Solid Waste and Recyclable Materials
  • Community Outreach: responsible for providing assistance and information to the public on various environmental topics 
  • Public Health: responsible for collecting and disposing of dead animals within the City limits

Department Accomplishments

In the last year, we:
  • Obtained TCEQ Landfill Expansion Permit
  • Executed a Household Hazardous Waste collection event   
  • Executed a grant to purchase recycling receptacles
  • Joined forces with Kerr County and collected over 9 tons of Hazardous Waste, more than 2 tons of unwanted electronics, and 248 unwanted tires
  • Issued more than 500 vouchers to dispose of bulky items

  • Coordinate with Republic Services to resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Execute a multi-year agreement for Household Hazardous Waste events
  • Increase educational awareness regarding the Solid Waste program
