[ARCHIVED] Disturbance Leads to Traffic Fatality

On Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 12:40 A.M., the Kerrville Police Department responded to a disturbance in the 1100 block of Broadway. The victim reported he was struck over the head with a beer bottle. The suspect was not on scene when police arrived.
At 1:20 A.M. Officer Harry Holt, observed the suspect vehicle in the 1000 block of Junction Highway. Officer Holt activated his emergency lights and attempted to initiate a traffic stop at Junction Highway and Woodlawn. The suspect refused to stop and began to evade police. The suspect led the police on a short chase down Woodlawn, to Milton, then onto Guadalupe Street.
The suspect, Rodney Walter Murkin, lost control of his vehicle in the 800 block of Guadalupe, hit a tree, struck an electrical pole, struck a gas main and was subsequently ejected from his vehicle.
Mr. Murkin was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace David Billeiter.
The Kerrville Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating the crash. Initial reports indicate speed and alcohol may have been a factor.
